A Nantucket Weekend Ends

curvy glassware for folks who drink something other than beerkids' silhouettes and a shining Brant Point LightWhen the rain interrupted our afternoon walk, we took shelter in the bar at Cioppino's where the curvy glassware glamorized the view but didn't tempt us. We just drank some beer and watched the Red Sox lose. By boat time, the rain had stopped and the usual goodbyes were being waved by perfectly silhouetted kids in front of a shining Brant Point light. The Gray Lady fully earned her name gray deck and more rain to comesun returns as we come into Hyannis Harbor and as we left Nantucket Harbor it was still gray. The rain returned while I slept, but when I woke up everything was transformed. Not seeing the sun gradually break through the clouds made the golden sea and sky all the more spectacular as we entered Hyannis Harbor. I just wanted to turn around and go back again.

To the Decisive Moment

Henri Cartier-Bresson, the renowned photographer who died Monday, is an inspiration, not only in his work, but in his words.

"Everything for me culminates in the minute; no, not in the minute, in the second, in the second and eternity."
"For me, the passion is to look, to look, to look."

What I love about carrying my camera everywhere with me, is how much more I see.

Garden Update

Remember those baby eggplants that were just starting in my roofdeck garden? As they've been slowly growing bigger over the past weeks, I've anticipated all sorts of eggplant goodies, from basic grilled to baba ghanoush. But today, the eggplants went missing. Bare stems were all that was left where the black beauties had been. I was bereft, until I noticed new digging among the struggling California poppies. And there, buried at each end of the planter, were the missing eggplants. I have only sympathy for the stupid squirrel that mistook them for some giant nuts.

Adventures in Crabbing

I've spent a ton of time trying to figure out how to add captions to the new gallery of photos I've put up about our crabbing adventures back in June. So far, I'm unsuccessful but undaunted, and will keep trying. In the meantime though, here are the pictures and you can write your own story. The photo titles might help a bit; for example, the one called 'oops', where the bite on the other end of the string turned out not to be a crab but a giant snapping turtle who also loved chicken drumsticks.
